Spoiler-Free Review: Empress of a Thousand Skies

“If all we are is what people think we are, then we’re all screwed.”

Author: Rhoda Belleza

The Kalusian dynasty has ruled the galaxy since days of old. Is the dynasty about to end?

Rhee wasn’t born for the throne, but when most of the royal family is killed in a transport accident she becomes heir to the throne. Rhee spent most of her childhood in seclusion with her tutors, learning the ways to rule. Now it’s time for her coronation. Someone else has other plans. When a new attempt on her life makes her question everything and everyone she thought she could trust.

Rhee is a good protagonist, she’s naive to the world without being stupid. She’s very smart in the games of the court, and I really like that she can make mistakes. Character growth!

I enjoyed this book. It’s a good teenage scifi adventure/mystery. I wish some of the politics and world building were a little more flushed out, but that is becoming a normal issue with me in fantasy / scifi novels. I do plan on reading the next book in this series.
