Spoiler-Free Review: The Count of Monte Cristo

“Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes.”

Author: Alexander Dumas

Let’s start the new year off right with a story about revenge and murder!

You try to do your dying captain a favor, and next thing you know you get made captain of the ship and set for a good life marrying the girl of your dreams! Life is great!

Then you get arrested on your wedding day under a false charge. Well if the last few years have taught us anything its that we can always trust the criminal justice system to. . . send you to prison without trial. What’s a hardworking guy to do?

Simple, just escape, call yourself the Count of Monte Cristo, and start an elaborate revenge plot to take down the men who destroyed your life. As they say: revenge is a dish best served cold.

This is a great revenge story. You start out completely on Edmond’s side and overtime you start to realize that a lot of innocent people are getting caught up in Edmond’s plans for revenge.

This is a great book for any angsty teen. You start out, all in with Edmond getting revenge, but then slowly come to realize the consequences of that revenge. It’s a great dramatic story with a melancholy ending.
